Public Education on proper use of bus facilities

SPTC has begun a sensitization programme targeting commuters. Regulations regarding proper use of buses will be posted on our website. Brochures will also be disseminated every now and then to better educate the public on their roles and responsibilities vis-à-vis the use of bus facilities.

Already the public has noticed “No Eating and Drinking” posters on the different buses. It has been observed that the buses are often littered with empty soft drink cans and bottles which can incite accidents. If left along the passage way, commuters can step on them and be injured. On the other hand containers that get under the driver’s seat can provoke accidents. Empty plastic, paper packages and bus tickets are a nuisance and they also attract rodents and other insects.

Passengers are also instructed not to speak too loud, shout or scream when on the bus. Too much noise can lead to accidents. In instances where the stop bell is not functioning the bus conductor may fail to hear commuters who want to get off at a stop. Sound originating from devices such as headphones or earphones should be kept low. Furthermore, noise pertaining from the said can be offensive.
In addition it shows a lack of respect for others.

Reporting an incident

Before commuters lodge complaints regarding any occurrences on any SPTC bus it is important they:

1. bring the matter to the attention of the driver who will initial at the back of the ticket

2. find a witness to justify the incident if it happened off the bus

3. report the case to SPTC as soon as possible

4. bring along their ticket

New Bus Regulations for transportation of students

To facilitate movement and to curb down on the number of students boarding public buses all Primary, Secondary and Post Secondary students have to board designated buses as far as possible.
Those who have to take public buses need to be in possession of a relevant pass issued by the Ministry of Education. Students who live within 3 kilometres of their school who are not provided with School bus service are liable to board public buses and pay SR2/- fare.

SPTC has introduced such measures after members of the general public have repeatedly complained that students are not taking their respective buses and putting pressure on public buses.
SPTC has also produced a leaflet giving details pertaining to use of buses by students.
