The Seychelles Public Transport Corporation (S.P.T.C.) was incorporated on 29th December 1977. It is the exclusive provider of road public transport in the Seychelles.
The main operations occur on Mahe, serving a population of around 80,000 people.
In addition, it operates on Praslin which has a population of around 10,000 people.
When SPTC was incorporated in 1977, the fleet composed of 15 BMC trucks and 25 Coasters.
In the 1980’s the Tata buses, Fiat Cacciamali (used mainly for contract services) buses were introduced. The Tata buses dominated the fleet composition. As the years goes by, new make/models of buses were purchased and with this we saw the arrival of the Ashok Leyland buses.
The staff strength which consisted of 50 staff in 1977 has increased considerably over the past 30 years and is currently at 420 staff members.
Initially, hand ticket machines were used to issue the passengers their tickets. Immediately, following the opening of the new Victoria Bus Terminal in June 1997 the Wayfarer Program which enable electronical management of traffic operations for example the bus schedules was introduced.
The program also enabled the use of the Electronic Ticket Machines (ETM) which was installed on all buses.
In its continuous effort to provide better services to its customers, SPTC decided to introduce the smart card systems.
In 2004 the Wayfarer program was upgraded to enable the issue of smart card. The smart card is a multi-prepaid ticket where the passenger buys pre-paid trips or load money on their cards, so that they can use in the period ahead.
Four different types of smart cards were introduced; Adult Group (Weekly), Adult Group (Monthly), Scholar Group (Weekly), Scholar Group (Monthly) and Stored Value Card.
SPTC introduced an Aircon Bus service, in 2004, to offer commuters the luxury of a more comfortable bus journey. The rates were slightly above the normal Rs3.00 fare. It ranges from Rs5.00 to Rs10.00 depending on the distance of travel.
